More Swings At The Plate

People earlier in their career are often enthusiastic about getting more opportunities and developing.

They want a development plan that is precise and procedural. Where if you do a,b and c you get a promo. Very often the only thing they need is more time (i.e. more swings at the plate). Some of the most valuable skills you develop over time are pattern matching. Having seen a situation or problem multiple times that you form instincts on how to navigate it.

This is an unsatisfying answer to a highly ambitious person since they believe they can control their career/outcomes with specific goals and tools.

Instincts are hard won through time, making mistakes and seeing/operating with a wide spectrum of people and products. There is no shortcut.

Coda

Silicon Valley has often rewarded youth and enthusiasm while being dismissive of people later in their career. While it is true that some people get set in their ways, form beliefs and skills that are outdated this is not universally true.

People earlier in their career are likely to reinvent the wheel or worse fall into traps well known by more experienced people. They are also likely to find new opportunities that more jaded people are quick to dismiss.

If you are earlier in your career don't underestimate experience. Be humble about what you don't know and confident in what you believe in.
